Preventative Maintenance for Semi Trucks

Preventative maintenance helps keep a semi truck operating well, reduce the costs of repairs, and extend the lifespan of the vehicle. We’ve gathered up the following preventative maintenance tasks that operators can easily tackle. If you want more maintenance tips or want to shop semi trucks for sale, contact Allegiance Truck Centers. We operate dealerships throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. We also serve Boston, Massachusetts, and the Southern New England area.

The Radiator

A semi truck’s radiator plays a crucial role in preventing the engine from overheating. But to do its job well, the radiator needs enough fluid. Regularly check the fluid levels and top off as needed. If you notice a leak, bring your semi truck in for professional maintenance. A leak can be a sign of a serious issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Tires

When tackling semi-truck preventive maintenance, it’s easy to forget about the tires. But tires in poor condition can cause a host of issues, from an increased chance of a blowout to decreased fuel efficiency. There are a few key tire preventive maintenance tasks:

  • Check the air pressure. Use a tire pressure monitor, then compare the results to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Adjust as needed.
  • Check the tread. Over time, the tread gets worn down. Eventually, it gets worn down enough to compromise the tire’s ability to maintain traction and will need replacement. Measure the tire tread every so often and replace the tires when needed.
  • Check for damage. Look over the semi-truck tires and make sure there are no signs of damage that could cause issues on the road.

The Fuel Vent

It’s not uncommon for pests to find their way into the fuel vent, which can lead to inaccurate fuel readings and performance issues. Check the fuel vent after the semi truck has sat in storage to make sure it's free of vermin.

The Brakes

Look over the brake drums, shoes, and pads. If you notice signs of wear, replace the given part. As part of preventative maintenance, it’s also wise to regularly have the semi truck brakes checked by a professional.

Miscellaneous Preventative Maintenance Tasks

Additional Maintenance Tasks

Have the diesel particulate filter and diesel oxidation catalyst inspected and serviced according to manufacturer guidelines. Have the aftertreatment fuel injector inspected and serviced as needed. Keep up with oil changes. Fix paint chips as soon as possible (to prevent the buildup of rust). Wash the semi truck regularly (to prevent a buildup of contaminants from harming the exterior).
